Getting Them to Quit By Hitting Them Where It Hurts
What is the best way to get people to stop smoking? Is it to tell them all of the health dangers that are associated with smoking? Addicted consumers still buy cigarettes no matter the cost. Those that do quit will buy other items with the money saved from not buying cigarettes. No matter the increase, raising tobacco prices (taxes) as not lead to a decline in cigarette revenues.
For example, price was the major reason why I personally decided to quit four years ago. The purchase price for a single pack was around $5.00 for my favorite brand. I was consuming about three to four packs a week, averaging around $15.00 dollars per week. There were others items that I could have purchased with that $15.00 like gas for example. I made the choice to quit and save myself about $60 a month. To enforce this, I purchased a feature on my cellphone that was equaled to the cost.
Supporting my decision were many studies that state "Higher cigarette prices reduce cigarette smoking by decreasing smoking prevalence and reducing the number of cigarettes smoked by continuing smokers." People that live in areas where prices are high were more motivated to seek help in quitting. Young adults from lower income areas were more responsive to price increases and less likely to pick up the addiction.
