Genetically-modified food are food in which its genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. This allows certain desired genes to pass to its “offspring” and also allows cross between those that are not from the same species. Researchers from the Food Policy Institute at Rutgers’ Cook College found that only 52% of Americans realized that genetically modified foods are sold in grocery stores and only 26% believed that they have ever eaten genetically modified foods. During the same decade, the latter half, a variation of the crop was developed which became resisted to the virus about 77% of the crops grown is modified.
Another crop that is genetically-modified and was one of the first is tomatoes. It is engineered to not rot so quickly and was originally modified to be resistant to antibiotics. Though this also cause concerns whether or not it will be passed on to us humans and cause us to be resistant to antibiotics as well.
And lastly potatoes is another crop that has been genetically modified. In the early 1990s scientist was looking for ways to be able to provide a vaccine to children in impoverish areas of the world. There answer was potatoes. Instead of walking or traveling hours away from the village to get a shot they would eat a potatoes that would allow their body to produce antibodies or a vaccine for a particular virus. Also research is being done to ensure another Irish Potato Famine does not occur again.
Unlike the US the European Union has one of the strictest regulations regarding genetically-modified food. Since modifications are consider new foods, they are subjected to extensive, case-by-case, science-based food evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority. For the US though we have three agencies that handles the regulation of genetically modified crops, Environmental Projection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
