Organizational leadership relates to the elements/content of organizational culture. Through the process of group/team formation within the organization, leaders develop/apply varying leadership styles to enhance/ influence individual performance. Gene One has a 36-month deadline to realize its growth targets, establish the company as a strong competitor within the biotechnological market, and show Wall Street that Gene One has the leadership and organizational capabilities to succeed as a public entity (University of Phoenix, 2004). Generic benchmarking of several companies has been done in order to analyze the influence of leadership styles on individual performance, develop strategies for managing the group process, apply conflict management methods to enhance overall group and team performance, and examine the roles and interaction of group and team members.
Gene One Benchmarking Analysis
Leadership styles were the first and most important finding derived from the analysis of the 10 companies benchmarked. The majority of the companies realized significant success which was directly related to an influential executive’s leadership ability. Transformational leadership was large contributor to long-term prosperity and the pursuit of the company’s vision. Overall, this style seems to have the greatest effect on employees and improves individual performance dramatically. When key executive roles were filled with leaders who possessed these skills, positive results followed shortly thereafter. Situational and transactional leadership are important in cases where transformational leadership does not work as well. Gene One has an executive with good leadership abilities; however, the executive team is lacking the experience necessary to take the company public.
When comparing how companies developed their strategies for managing the group process relating to organizational design, many companies in Gene One’s situation allow the external environment to force change. Instead of planning ahead with solid organizational strategies already in place, the fast growth that most of these companies realized came about more quickly than they were prepared to deal with. As such, technology within the company must change quickly along with the organizational size. A critical factor, and common theme among the companies that were most successful, was their ability to build their teams by attracting high quality and talented individuals at every level of the organization. The hiring and training programs of these companies stand out as some of the best in the country.
Conflict management is an area that Gene One must improve in order to see immediate benefit. Gene One’s CEO is not handling the internal conflict between the executive team very well. Applying conflict management methods to enhance group and team performance is likely to be the most difficult aspect of running a business.
