Functional Areas of Business
Managers do more than just manage people. Managing involves managing different areas of a business as well. Managers are also responsible for enabling learning by the employees. The roles of managers in the different areas of business depend on the functional area of the business. The different roles of managers in the different functional areas of business will be analyzed and the common functional areas of business will be noted and briefly defined. The ways that a manager can enable the learning by employees will also be detailed.

“Accounting professionals usually work in one of three areas: accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll” (Suttle, 2014). Accounts receivable is the area of accounting where customer debts are collected, accounts payable is the area where company debts are paid, and payroll is the area that pays all of the employees.
There are several different types of managers. These are engineering, personnel, marketing, production, administration, information system, and research managers (Fox, 1992). The article “Exploring Managers’ Jobs” contains information pertaining to research conducted for each of these functional areas of management. Of the 27 engineering managers, there were only two tasks that were not clustered with any other task (Fox, 1992). “Three of the remaining seven clusters are Mintzberg roles – Figurehead, Liaison and Resource Allocator, whilst two can be identified as Stewart job profiles, “Troubleshooter” and “Committeeman”. The remaining clusters were identified as “Expert” and “Investigator” (Fox, 1992).
Personnel manager roles were identified as a Resource Allocator, Emissaries, Discusser, Expert, and Visible Supervisor (Fox, 1992). Marketing manager roles were identified as Discriminator, Negotiator, Group Manager, External Contact, Scheduler, Organizer, Go-between, and Expert (Fox, 1992). Production manager roles could be identified as Resource Allocator, Emissaries, Appraiser, Supervisor, Project Manager, Initiator, Strategist, and Group Leader (Fox, 1992). Administration manager roles were identified as Leader, Discusser, Writer, Expert, and Adjudicator (Fox, 1992). Information system manager roles were identified as Resource Allocator, Negotiator, Insider, Real-time manager, Seeker, and Expert (Fox, 1992). The research manager roles were identified as Figurehead, Negotiator, Writer, Troubleshooter, Reviewer, and Go-between (Fox, 1992).
