Friendship 6 Essay

1203 words - 5 pages

“A friendship that can cease has never been real.” This quote by Saint Jerome is mirrored by the two friendships in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Best friends are loyal to one another and always have each other’s backs. A true friendship does not end by a failed plan or a disaster. Friendship lasts only as long as people are willing to keep it going.
Friends always stick together even if it’s a burden or if fear is holding them back. “No look! I was just foolin’, Lennie. ‘cause I want you to stay with me.”(Steinbeck, 13) This quote takes place when George is mentioning how easy life would be without Lennie. Lennie offered to go off and live in the ...view middle of the document...

Why he’d do any damn thing I tol’ him. If I tol’ him to walk over a cliff, over he’d go.”(Steinbeck, 40)Lennie always did what George told him to do. He was like a dog loyal to its master. Even if it made no sense at all he would do it because friendship means to him than logic. “I found it. I found a single sustaining thought. The thought was, You and Phineas are even already. You are even in enmity. You are both coldly driving ahead for yourselves alone. . . . I felt better. Yes, I sensed it like the sweat of relief when nausea passes away; I felt better. We were even after all, even in enmity. The deadly rivalry was on both sides after all.”(Knowles, 45-46) Gene had thought that Phineas and he were fighting to be best in the school. But truly, Gene was just envious of Phineas and how he could strive at what ever he did and never get in trouble. The rivalry in this friendship was not able to erode this strong bond of friendship these two young men shared.
Friends always stay together even after something goes wrong or disaster strikes. “ “You ain’t gonna leave me, are ya, George? I know you ain’t.” George came stiffly near and sat down beside him. “No.” ”( Steinbeck, 103) Even after Lennie had killed Curly’s wife George still stuck by his side and did what he had to. George made a promise that he always kept and that was to take care of Lennie. “He was nodding his head, his jaw tightening and his eyes closed on the tears. “I believe you. It’s okay because I understand and I believe you. You’ve already shown me and I believe you.” ” (Knowles, 183) Although Gene had jostled the limb causing Finny to fall and shatter his leg he still forgave Gene of his doing. Friendship meant so much to Phineas that not even a career ending injury kept him from forgiving Gene of his doing.
Looking at both novels, it is obvious that in one character has to stand up for another in both books but in Of Mice and Men Lennie wants the help, but in A Separate Peace Finny would not want a defender. “Blood welled from his nose. “George,” he cried. “Make ‘um let me alone, George.” He backed until he was against the wall, and Curly followed,...
