Friedman Family Assessment
A community health nurse cares for individuals and families through comprehensive and continuing care. The community health care nurse is not restricted to the care of one particular age group of population. The community health nurse encourages all participates to contribute in the education, promotion and maintenance of good health. JM has recently been diagnosed with hypertension and GERD. He follows up with the doctor approximately every 4-6 weeks. After the birth of the second child MM has had problems with anemia and follows up with the OB/GYN every 3 months for a blood count. Both JM and MM state that they do not have time for hobbies and that after working their schedules leave them exhausted.
Development State and History of Family
This family is in Duvall’s Stage III. In this stage the family is responsible in socializing children. The family is also preparing to the adjustment for separation when children go to grade school (TWSU, n.d.) There are no other responsibilities in this stage that the family needs to meet. Both parents are in good health. JM has mild hypertension and GERD. His hypertension in controlled by Diovan and Nexium daily. MM has had problems with amenia since the birth of the second child, CM, she takes a multivitamin and an iron pill daily. The children are healthy except the occasional childhood illness, such as ear infection or seasonal cold.
JM has two jobs to help provide for the family. MM works shift work and is the primary caretaker of the home and children. MM cleans, cooks, washes the clothes and dishes. She also cares for the children and makes sure they get to and from school and day care.
The family’s home is a single story single family home built in 2007. The house is clean and organized. No one smokes in the home and no indoor pets. Once inside the front door the floor plan is very open. The family room is very large with the kitchen and dining room joining. There is a master bedroom and bathroom off the northeast side of the living room and guest bedroom and bathroom of the southeast side of the living room. Off the southwest side of the home are two other bedrooms with bathroom and a laundry room. At the rear of the living room is a door that leads at the back patio and yard that has a swing set and trampoline for the children. There is central heating and air in the house. The home is on city water. There is an alarm system and smoke detectors wired to the alarm system.
The couple lives in a middle class neighborhood. The elementary school is 2 miles away. The closest supermarket is approximately seven miles away. The closest fire station is approximately 1o miles away and the closest police station is approximately 15 miles from their home. JM and MM report that the crime rate in the area is low. MM sister lives approximately four miles away and her parents live approximately 30 miles away. JM has no family close.
Family Structure and Function
Communication between this couple feels tense. MM is the primary decision maker however she complains that JM is never happy with her decisions. Finances are very tight for this couple. Although the oldest child attends pre-k she must attend before and after school and the daycare the younger child attends. This cost the family $800 per month. MM has...
