University 101 is a college class that I feel all college students should take as a freshman. It goes into different details about settling into a college routine, talks about why college is important and many other new things that come with college. It explains that college isn’t all about sports and partying that as young adults we have that image of college in our head. College is another step in education, and in today’s society having a college degree is very important when trying to get a high paying job. Last but not least it explains how important overcoming procrastination. Don’t be the student that always wait the day before an assignment is due to start on it. Work on things ahead of time will make college a lot easier. You’ll also learn things such as the importance of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions. It talks about how emotions are so important to you and are sometimes over looked. I learn that you should never ignore your emotions no matter how you feel. You have to learn to understand your emotions and be able to say how you feel and you also have to be able to manage your emotions. Throughout the class you’ll learn tips, skills, and knowledge how to maintain happy emotions. It also talks about how emotions affect success in a negatively and positively way. It stats that students who are emotionally intelligent get higher grades that students who can’t manage their emotions. Emotional intelligence can be improved, the four steps to improving emotional intelligence are identifying your strengths and weaknesses, setting realistic goals, formulate a plan, and checking your progress on a regular basis.
Our universal book introduces us to different learning styles or preferences, how learning styles and teaching styles often differ. It also teaches you how to optimize your learning styles in any classroom setting and how to understand and recognize a learning disability. When arriving to college you should try your best to figure out the best way you learn quick as you can. There are many different types of way to learn. You have your visual learners, aural learners, your read and write learns, and you kinesthetic learners. I found out that I was a kinesthetic learner why reviewing this chapter. The Myers-Briggs type indicator is the best known and most widely used personality inventories that can also be used to describe learning styles. Learning styles and teaching styles sometimes cause a conflict, this is common when going off to college. I also learned that a portion of the population have a learning disability, and that attention disorder are common in children, adolescents, and adults.
The most important skill you’ll acquire in college is the ability and confidence to think for yourself. This is basically Critical Thinking which is the ability to think for yourself and to reliably and responsibly make the decisions that affect your life. Critical thinking is important in college because you will be making decision that will affect your life forever and you have to be able to make them. You have to become a critical thinker, asking questions and not being afraid will help become a critical thinker. Also considering multiple points of view will help you start become a critical thinker because you will start seeing things in different perspective, opening your eyes and mind to more.
