The Four Functions of Management
Running business requires effective and efficient management. Management is the process of working with people to achieve common goals with minimum waste of time, money, people and materials. Perspectives will show the act of management comprises of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
Planning:
Planning is the function of business that involves setting business objectives and determining a course of action that will facilitate business profits while increasing shareholder value. Management will supervise employees and delegate assignments designed in the organization phase.
To be effective at leading employees, managers need to understand employee personalities, motivations, values, and emotions. Once managers understand behaviors concerning employees the likelihood of managing effectively is increased and business success is possible. Simply put, managing is a human science making sizable contributions to understand and perfecting management.

Controlling:
Controlling is the fourth step in the functions of management. Controlling involves monitoring progress of employees and ensuring performance stays inline with business goals. The function of controlling consists of multiple steps including; establishing performance standards, monitoring and comparing actual employee standards against set standards, and correcting issues that fall below set standards. Whether one realizes controlling functions or not, all managers are directly or indirectly involved in the function of controlling. Companies and managers can measure the control of performance in numerous ways.
1. Financial statements
2. Production reports
3. Sales reports
4. Customer satisfaction reports
All of these statement and reports tell the story of how a business is functioning which in return shows how effective managers are functioning and controlling.
To understand management is to understand planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Throughout time, business had changed and adapted to financial environments, technology revolutions, customer demands as well as highly educated consumers. Effective and efficient management is about solving problems using the functions of management. Effective manager not only look at achieving business goals, but the process of achieving set goals which leads to business.
Personal Experience:
Being a working individual for 35 five years, I have learned how managers need to understand business functions. Over the years my work experience has demonstrated some managers understand the four functions of management and some do not. Being involved in aviation is no different than many other businesses.
Managers in aviation need to understand the planning, organizing, leading and controlling process. Aviation managers’ plan for flight departments to deliver safe and efficient business travel for company personal and customers. In doing so managers look at missions that will be completed and rate risks associated with completing missions.
