To be a successful business or organization depends on how well management utilizes the four function of management, rather it is effectively or efficiently. To understand better the fundamental function of management, one must define management. According to Bateman and Snell, “Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals” (Bateman & Snell, 2013). In this paper, the functions of management will be discussed and how each function will relate to the organization. The four basic functions of management consist of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
The first function of management consist of planning. According to the textbook, “Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals” (Bateman & Snell 2013). Planning is, setting realistic targets, and determining what are the right steps to take, to make them. The manager must take the time to analyze the approach to achieving the goals. For example, Metro, managers have individual goals he or she wants their team to meet. And in order for the team to complete this objective, there has to be steps that the team needs to complete to meet the quota for the group. In the customer service department, the manager, set a goal for the call center to be at 99% on incoming calls within two weeks which was a realistic goal. An article, written June 1999 stated: Succession planning has traditionally centered on a few key executive roles. To support a competency -driven organizations, success planning

A succession planning system should enable you to; review a broad array of leadership positions that affect the company, especially in global or diversified organizations; and manage the continual development of tomorrow’s leaders.
Planning evaluates both internal and external factors that affect the organization. It creates value for the organizations. There are many types of plans and planning which a manager can use within the planning functions. The textbook states three different plans, strategic planning, tactical planning, and operational planning. According to H. Mintzberg, “Strategic planning is the process of analyzing competitive opportunities and threats, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, and then determining how to position the organization to compete effectively in its environment.” For example, the Colonel, came out with the secret recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken, which made them successful. All these years’ later competitors are still trying to find out what is in the eleven herbs and spices. According to Bateman and Snell, “Whatever strategy managers adopt, the most effective strategy is one...
