The Solution to FDA Oversight
Food is an essential part of everyone’s life. Therefore, there is a huge food industry that is intertwined with everyone’s life. People may not realize our relationship with food is actually quite convoluted and corrupt. This convolution and corruption are derived from food manufacturers using harmful chemicals and additives in food that could be harmful towards those who consume products containing these harmful substances. Alvin and Virginia Silverstein, authors of the book The Chemicals We Eat and Drink, both agree that all food—natural or not—are chemicals (Silverstein). However, people need these “chemicals” to survive. Ultimately, everyone will consume—at many points in their lives—processed foods that may not particularly be safe for them in terms of the kind of ingredients used. To fix this, an ultimatum must be acted upon. All chemicals and additives added to food in the United States (US) that pose any ...view middle of the document...
In simpler terms, however, the FDA is not strict enough in their rules that allow manufacturers to slip through the cracks and create loopholes to be able to add whatever ingredients they wish—safe or not. If there were stricter rules over the FDA to monitor, regulate, and ban certain ingredients, food would be a lot safer for consumers. There would also be less liability on the consumer and more on the manufacturers to not create any confusion when it comes to safety. Quintessentially, the “FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of [the] human and veterinary… food supply…” (“What We”). However, it seems the FDA has a hard time committing to this statement. Safety should be number one priority and if FDA oversight continues on manufacturers, the problem will only continue and everyone’s safety will be at risk.
Ultimately, the underlying problem in today’s food industry that raises concern for the health of today’s consumers is chemicals. There are a number of chemicals that have been found in today’s food products that have raised red flags. These chemicals can range from food additives to colorings that are all added for an individual purpose. However, it is significant to understand that certain chemicals have been found to cause complications to one’s health, such as cancer. Most chemicals usually go unnoticed and unregulated. Thus, the producer or even consumers do not know if what they are consuming is safe to eat. This is ultimately due to the FDA’s failure to regulate and assess everything a producer uses. Such as, for example, a chemical called transglutaminase binds scraps of meat that is not safe to inhale in its natural form. Carey Polis, a reporter for Huffington Post, stated the chemical is USDA (United States Department of Agriculture)-approved (Polis). However where is the FDA’s opinion on the matter? The FDA alludes that it is ultimately up to the producers to assess their own food to evaluate its safety for consumption. This problem can turn to the food companies themselves for allowing these harmful chemicals as ingredients in their food. It seems that there is a lack of testing within food industries in America and a solution should be made for ensuring safer food.
