They fit into the slots into the CPU unless they are reinstalled or integrated into the motherboard. Some are external and are attached to computers through serial or parallel ports. NIC cards for laptops are generally external. An interface cards takes the data from the PC, converts it into data “frames” that are broadcast onto the network, and sends it to another interface card. That card receives the frame, converts them into data, and sends it to that PC. These cards have around 100 – 300 feet transmission range.
Access Points (AP) - They are used instead of hubs and acts as repeaters and they must hear all computers in WLAN. They are specially configured nodes on wireless local area networks. They act as central transmitter on receiver of WLAN radio signals. Access Points used in homes and offices are usually small, dedicated hardware devices featuring a built in network adapter, antennas and radio transmitter. They support Wi-Fi wireless communication standard.
Some computers use power over Ethernet (EOP), this technology integrates power into a standard LAN infrastructure. It enables power to be provided to the network device, such as an IP phone or a network camera, using the same cable that is used for the network connection. POE technology is regulated in a standard called IEE 802.3af and is designed in a way that does not degrade the network data communication performance or decrease the network reach.
