Expanding My Education

The act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. Does this sound familiar? According to Webster’s Dictionary this is the definition of education. I agree with this definition and I feel that education should be improved and updated to fit the needs to our society. Many things like your surroundings can be a factor in receiving or improving a good education. Sadly your surroundings can also be a negative factor in the advancement of your education. Luckily for me, I feel I had all the surroundings to receive a good education. My peers, my school, and mother all helped shape my experience in getting a good education.

Similar to the peers, my high school played a major role in my education growth as well. Filled with an all-star line up of teachers and administrators I could say that I would not be the same person without them. They taught me life lessons in and out of the classroom. Their goal was to make us more educated with books as well as educated in being a good person. I feel my high school was like no other. Not many students can say they go out to breakfast with their principal or teach your basketball coach saxophone lessons. This wasn’t just school it was an extended family and a family is what prepares you to be educated for life.
One last factor that aided in the growth of my education was my mother. Born and raised in Jamaica, my mother was one of eleven children. She was brought up very disciplined, determined and hard working. She tried to instill those same values in me as a young child. Whether it was school, the band, or community service, she taught me to go all out and do my best because if I didn’t, there was no point in doing it. Up until this day she still says, “Make sure in whatever you do give a hundred and ten percent because if you fall short, you will still get that hundred.” I kept this mentality all the way from middle school to high school. Although she could be tough sometimes I love her because I know I wouldn’t be where I am without her.
There is no way I would be able to say I would have gotten as far as I am or a successful as I am without the help of my peers, school, and mother shaping my education. Surrounding yourself with positive company can really help shape and improve ones knowledge or general reasoning, so you are prepared for mature life. I would consider myself lucky with the surroundings I was born into: it is now my job to take advantage of what god gave me and expand my education.
