Examining The Relationship Between Temple University Japan Students’ Internet Addiction Scores And Students’ Grade Point Average

This study examined the relationships between Temple University Japan students’ Internet Addiction scores and students’ grade point average (GPA). This study was based on the data collected at Temple University Japan Campus on 2010 July 13 and 14. A convenience sample of 57 students participated in the study. Students completed a set of questionnaire during their classes. Students who scored high on Internet Addiction Test (IAT) had a significant negative correlation between IAT scores and GPA while students who scored low on IAT had no significant correlation. One study found that students’ GPA and pathological internet usage have a negative correlation (Bayraktar, & Gun, 2007). Therefore, I want to study the relationship between the level of IA and GPA. This study is a part of Psych 2196, Scientific Thinking in Psychology class and is conducted to investigate internet usage among TUJ students. Students in our class were researchers and Professor S. Zimmerman supervised the study. Student researchers were divided into three groups to investigate three topics which are gender differences in using internet, loneliness and GPA. In my paper, I want to focus on association between GPA and Internet use among TUJ students.
According to the Huang et al. (2009) study, problematic internet use is a predictor of poor academic achievement among college students. College students tend to have poor grade because they could not stop online activities. In my study, I used Internet Addiction Test (IAT) scores as an independent variable to test the hypothesis because it measures how much time a person devoted to Internet use (Internet Addiction Disorder, 2003). I used GPA as a dependent variable because it is an indicator of students’ academic performance. The purpose of this study is to answer a question that there is a negative relationship between GPA and IA scores. The first part of my hypothesis is students who have higher IAT score tend to have lower GPA. The second part is students who have lower Internet Addiction Test (IAT) score tend to have higher GPA. Participants were divided into two groups by the mean IAT scores. GPA of students with lower IAT scores was predicted to be higher than those of students with higher IAT scores.
Method
Participants
Participants were 57 university students from Temple University Japan. Participants were from 15 different countries which are Japan, U.S.A, Korea, China, Germany, France, Italy, Ghana, Canada, Switzerland, Columbia, Taiwan, Philippine, Russia, and Uruguay. Among these countries, there were 29 Japanese and 15 American. They were 26 men and 31 women ranged in age from 19 to 39 years (M = 23.30, SD = 3.69). Among them, 30 were Japanese and 15 were American We asked them to fill out a questionnaire in their classrooms. All students filled out the questionnaire while they were in the classroom except one student voluntarily came to ask for the questionnaire. All participants were enrolled in 10 undergraduate courses, five of which were psychology courses. We went to other classes which we attended in this Summer-2010 to give a questionnaire to other fellow students at TUJ whom are participants. The classes we had are depended on the classes that researchers took. Therefore, they were a convenience sample.
