Examine the main trends in birth and deaths since 1900(24 marks)
Sociologists use the idea of birth rates to measure how many births have been occurring. It is usually described as the number of live births per 1000 of the population per year. The trend highlights that the birth rate since 1900 has been fluctuating. In addition the fertility rates have decreased as well.
From 1918 to 1946 birth rates in the U.K. fell significantly. An explanation to support why this occurred is because of World War 1 and 2. During this time period, many men had left their wives to join the war. This lead to a decrease in births as males were not present in their home country. In the 1900’s, while many sociologists claim that the falling IMR led to a fall in birth rates, others reject this view. For example, Brass and Kabir (1978) argue that the trend to smaller families began not in rural areas, for longer where the IMR first began to fall, but in urban areas, where the richer people remained higher.
People having less children decreases the birth rate heavily. The increasing child centeredness both of the family and of society as a whole has encouraged a shift from quantity to quality. Parents now have fewer children and provide more attention and resources on these few children they bear. Donald Hirsch a sociologist is researching alternatives to an ageing population. He calls this fair ageing. Hirsch and his team have five kinds of change. First, the ways in which society needs to change its attitudes.Second, the methods that need to be implemented for the older people need to be enabled to participate more fully in society.Third, the infrastructure needs to change in order to allow them to do so. Fourth, the ways in which we distribute resources in their lives. And finally, ways in which Hirsch can deploy resources wisely, in order to enhance people’s opportunities to participate and to improve their quality of life. This helps to lower the death rates thus making the ageing population effective.
