Evaluating the Research Process
The article “Are abnormal premorbid personality traits associated with Alzheimer’s disease?-A case-control study” is very informative for those researching such cases. This paper will provide an explanation as to how the research for the above article was conducted. Research is a vital process that consists of very specific stages which result in new conclusions. With any research project which is conducted, there must be ethical considerations. This includes, but is not limited to, understanding on both the participants’ and researchers’ role of participation. As stated previously, there were both written and verbal consents provided for each separate group: the group with Alzheimer’s, the control group, and the informants. Just as any other individual with Alzheimer’s, sometimes it is hard for them to have a full understanding, or “grasp the concept,” of what is occurring and what they are participating in. However, it was approved for those participating in this research to provide verbal consent for their participation and evaluation. This in itself may be questionable as to whether or not it is appropriate, or ethically appropriate. The reason for that is because those with Alzheimer’s do not truly understand what exactly is going on, get confused very easily, and are very forgetful. Another aspect which may need to be taken into ethical consideration would be the fact that those who were participants were all white and British.
The form of statistical analysis which was used throughout this study can be classified as inferential statistical analysis. Inferential statistical analyses are taken from a specific population. Like any other information which is obtained while conducting research, the data can help to form predictions. This study does show a link with Alzheimer’s disease and abnormal personalities. The participants with on-set Alzheimer’s disease had been less social and very insecure in their mannerism. Where “both cases and controls received informant ratings of premorbid personality” (Nicholas, Moran, Foy, Brown,...
