Errors within the Health Care Industry
With the health care reform fully implemented, the number of patients that have access to health care benefits is at an all time high. With a demand for health care services, health care professionals are actively hiring and training employees to meet the demand. While employees undergo trainings to learn the positions, there are many organizations that are unable to fully train employees due to the demand. Since the new improvements have been implemented, Loma Linda has not experienced any additional cases (Abra, S., 2015).
John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital was fined $100,000 for not adequately discharging a patient to another facility. The uninsured patient who suffered from liver damaged was abandoned at the side of the road awaiting a ride to another hospital. Upon investigation, it was determined that the staff did not follow discharge protocols (Abra, S., 2015).
The incidents reviewed all could have been prevented if staff would have followed the hospital’s policies and protocols that were in place. Since these incidents have come to the public’s attention, the hospitals have reviewed the incidents and further educated staff and implemented new improvements to prevent further incidences from occurring.
How the hospital’s structure and affected the incident.
Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Loma Linda University Medical Center, and John F Kennedy Medical Hospital all had one thing in common. An error occurred and the patient suffered or died as a result. Health care professionals have a great deal of responsibility due to the fact that our errors could further harm a patient rather than healing them. In the incident of Kaiser Permanente and John F. Kennedy Medical Hospital, protocols were not followed by staff members, which lead to the medical error. In the case of Loma Linda University Medical Center, patients acknowledge that they are being treated by residents verse attending physicians. While residents pose a risk in treating patients, the hospital has a responsibility to protect patients and not subjecting them to uneducated residence. Loma Linda immediately addressed the situation and further implemented new guidelines for residences to follow.
Resources to be allocated to prevent this situation in the future. Due to the extent of the incidents, all employees within the hospital should undergo mandated training which will not only review existing polices and protocols in place to prevent these situations but allow employees to understand why the hospital exercises these polices. Employees should also undergo empathy and empowerment trainings. When employees are given tools to empower themselves within the workplace, they are more likely to correct errors and address situations without fully depending on management. In addition, empowered employees are typically more committed loyal, and conscientious. Employees with these qualities will typically go above and beyond to ensure that they are compliant and following all rules and regulations (Richards, L., 2014).
In addition, employees should be required to undergo empathy training. At times, health care professionals become consumed in their workload and begin to forget why they entered into the health care industry.
