Maya’s Husband Is Sick
When it comes to ethics in the workplace trying to do the right thing becomes difficult. We are often faced with decisions that may affect our relationship with others and how far we go in our careers. Maya confides in Alicia regarding her husband’s condition and the reason why she did not want other employees to know what was going on because she did not want others, including her boss, to think that she could not handle or do her job. Focusing on Maya, she should absolutely not inform her boss on what is going on with her husband’s health. Maya should have not even informed Alicia on what was going on because if Alicia did decide to use the information, Maya could lose her job and would not have any proof to cover herself in case she wanted to take her employers to court to fight the matter.
In my opinion Alicia should not use the information at all that Maya has given her, because it would be unethical to use that information. If the information was used out of concern for the company based on if Maya had been performing poorly than I would say the information would become useful, but if the information is used merely for Alicia to be considered instead of Maya because she does not have “a lot on her plate” would be unethical and immoral.
Here are some things to consider before sharing what may be too much of your personal life at work. Religious beliefs, political beliefs or sexual orientation. Of course there are anti-discrimination laws to protect you on the job, but there are subtle ways these things can be held against you, and you’ll never be able to prove it.
