Ethnic Groups and Discrimination
The ethnic group that I was able to identify with the most would have to be the Irish. I am what you may call a Heinz 57 mixture. I belong to quite a few of the different ethnic groups such as Irish, Danish, English, and Castilian Spanish, but the one that is the most would be the Irish. The reason that I chose the Irish to write about is because I am more Irish than anything else and I think that their whole culture as well as the country region is very fascinating. Institutional discrimination was a factor due to Xenophobia being such a huge deal to most people in that day. Reverse discrimination was also a big thing within the communities because of the fact that Americans would discriminate highly against the mixing of cultures and having the Irish mixed becoming Irish Americans. The glass ceiling, glass walls, or glass elevator also existed when they were not allowed to move up the ladder of success and class.
The Irish immigrants were subjected to many different types of prejudice, segregation, and racism due to the fact that they were from another country and they were the poorest of all of the immigrants. They did not have the money, jobs, homes, food, or other possessions like the natural born citizens or the upper or middle class citizens were so fortunate to have. Because of this that made them different and some people just do not do well with things that are different. The same things still go on to this day just in different forms of it.
