Unit III English Composition
12. A topic sentence briefly informs the reader what is to be covered in a given paragraph. Essentially, a topic sentence is stated at the beginning of the sentence. However, this is not always the case. A topic sentence could take the following five positions in a sentence;
• Stated first
This is a topic sentence that appears at the beginning of a paragraph. The sentence gives the reader a basic idea of what to expect in the paragraph.
• Stated last
It is a topic sentence that is stated at the end of the sentence. This allows the author to develop a paragraph and summarize with a convincing conclusion at the end.
• Stated in the middle
This is a topic ...view middle of the document...

In addition, the topic sentence substantiates the thesis statement.
Conclusion
This is a summarizing sentence that comes at the end of the paragraph. The sentence wraps up the argument developed in the paragraph and gives a summary. The conclusion helps the reader to connect the argument that is being developed and the topic sentence stated at the beginning.
Connectors
Connectors will come in handy in developing a paragraph that is logically connected. I would use connectors to ensure the sentences and the ideas that develop the argument are logically connected. I would also use connectors to demonstrate the relationship that exist among the ideas. This will help the reader to have a vivid flow of the argument being developed because the connection and the relationship are crystal clear.
Use of examples and illustrations
The development of a coherent paragraph requires evidence to support the argument. I would use examples and illustrations to back up my ideas. This will help in the development of arguments that are solid and authentic. Use of examples and illustrations enable the reader to get convinced
Reasonable length
I would ensure the paragraph exceeds no more than 200 words. A lengthy paragraph makes the reader to wear down. The 200 words should suffice developing a topic sentence, solid supporting sentences and a concluding remark.
Unity
Unity in a paragraph is achieved through ensuring that only a single idea is being developed. At no time should two conflicting ideas feature in a paragraph. The ideas being developed in a paragraph should be tied with the topic sentence in the beginning. Similarly, the concluding sentence should summarize the paragraph with the same idea.
14. Four examples of connectors that show contrast
Connectors are words that used to link ideas in a paragraph. They are used to link compound sentences or phrases. Contrast connectors are used to show two contrasting ideas. Examples of contrast connectors include;
1. However
This is a commonly used contrast connector that is used to illustrate the contrast between two clauses. A sentence can have two clauses that have a different meaning. The connector however is used to link...
