“Pregnancy”

This is a poem written by Sally-Ann Murray. The title of the poem is already describing what the context of the poem is. How a young mother is experiencing her time up until birth.
In the first stanza the “I” which refers to the speaker, meaning the mother. When referring to “you” they are talk about the fetus inside of the mother. In this stanza the woman is unsure about her feelings towards the physical changes during pregnancy as well ...view middle of the document...

The metaphor in the last line of the stanza “breasting a cargo through erratic waves” she is referring to the fetus as the cargo she is heavily carrying in erratic waves meaning through difficulties, but even though she finds it difficult she is breasting it, meaning nurturing it. In this stanza her belly is growing, giving evidence to her pregnancy.
The fourth stanza the metaphor of pregnancy and a blossoming flower is one that is used often, referring to the beauty of both a blossoming flower and a woman about to give birth. But the woman in this poem doesn’t feel beauty emotionally or physically, she explains this with stating that she is not a flower. She is not referring to “pistil” the female organs of a plant. She is rather comparing how a pistil suits a flower and how she feels motherhood doesn’t suit her. The word pistil is used as metonymy for motherhood.

In the fifth stanza it becomes clearer that the woman is not accepting her pregnancy. The changes happening to her body letting her feel powerless to stop it. “my power is limited as I try to hold but refuse to shape”, this showing her frustration towards her body changing. The repetition of my “my bad –my body” in the last line of the stanza shows she wants to be in control of what is happening to her body. She doesn’t give into any cravings to show herself she still has some control over her body and mind. Denial is very forth coming at this stage of the poem.
Stanza six a touch of feminism is brought up. In the second line of this stanza the she refers to woman binding their daughters’ feet, with this she is trying to describe the pain she is feeling now during her pregnancy. She also seems to be mad by referring to the fathers’ role as easy comparing it metaphorically in the last line of the stanza “the fathers celebrate the birth of boys in bars.” By making...
