Arranged Marriages
Would you like your parents to arrange a marriage for you? Most Americans would say, “No Way!” But arranged marriages are an important part of Pakistani culture. I have friend who is from Pakistan who supposed to get arrange marriage but he agented his in Pakistani culture arranged marriages are mostly related to religion. One way that arranged marriages are beneficial is that they promote a strong family. In some cases women have the opportunity to work, but mostly women stay at home to take care of the household. In the new generation, the traditions and the culture are changing. While love marriages are usually associated with romance, love at first sight and personal freedom, an arranged marriage are mostly centered on building a family, adjustment between the partners and is regard for the wishes of one’s family and religion. Love is believed to grow with time by living together and adjusting to each other’s personality rather than it being a product of passionate attraction.
In Pakistani culture, arranged marriage is viewed as the norm and is accepted by young adults. A reason for this is the low divorce rate of these types of marriages. His culture and some other cultures are against divorce in arranged marriages. If something happens and the couple decides to divorce, before they get a divorce the family will become involved in the problem to try to find a solution. According to Enrichment Journal on the divorce rates in America, “the divorce rate in America for first marriage is 41%; the divorce rate in America for second marriage is 60%; the divorce rate in America for third marriage is 73%.” In contrast, according to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, while nearly half of all Pakistanis (48%) believe that the rate of divorce has increased, a significant 32% believe that there has been no notable change in the divorce rate in the last ten years, whereas 19% claim it has decreased. There are a variety of factors felt to have led to more divorce; a lack of patience tops the list as cited at 48%, followed by disconnect with religion (33%), influence of western culture (27%), women giving priority to their careers (12%), and men’s lack of interest in their marriage). (Gilini Research Foundation, Islamabad, June 2, 2010)
Arranged marriages help avoid the common stress caused by finding a life partner and the stress of dating. With all the help of parents, family and friends, young people can feel much more confident and relaxed about finding a suitable partner. An arranged marriage is good; the process provides young people with a lot of support. In western countries, finding a perfect mate is very difficult. Finding a life partner is challenging and young people in the western countries may find dating stressful or feel apprehensive about not finding a partner at all. Arranged marriages help to avoid the dating stress. With all the help of parents, family and friends, young people feel more confident and relaxed in their parents finding a suitable partner for them. That is why in most of the Middle East arranged marriages are more successful than love marriages. In arranged marriages, the whole family will support the young person, but in love marriages, most of the time the family has little or no input. Above all,...
