Greek and Roman Empire
The Greek culture was a great influence on the Roman Empire. The Greeks have made a great impact on the Roman culture. The Greek culture influenced the beginning of the Roman civilization because they stole ideas from Greeks. Roman culture was a unique blend of Roman and Greek ideas. Ancient Greece and Rome had big impact on culture in the western world.
The Greeks used plays, and sports for entertainment to explain the world around. They based much of their plays off of their religion, comedies, and tragedies that showcased their struggle, sorrow, and humor about the human condition. They also used plays to teach life lessons. The Romans were influenced by the Greeks through their literary works (Acme Articles, 2013). This influence on literature spread through the language and religion (Yahoo answers, 2013). The Romans authors based much of their writings on the Greek philosophy (Speivogel, 2005). Rome’s famous writers were inspired by the Greek literature. The poet Horace wrote “Satires and Odes” that made fun of human weakness. Odes poems expressed emotions about life. He poet Ovid wrote works that were based on Greek myths. The poet Catullus also admired Greek writings and wrote short poems about love, sadness, and envy. The writer Virgil drew some of his ideas from the poet Homer and his “Odyssey”.
The Roman world of entertainment was centered on violence. The Colosseum was the most popular amphitheater in Ancient Rome. People gathered to see the fights between gladiators, slaves, prisoners, and wild animals (History on the net, 2013). These fights often were very violent and resulted in death. Roman plays followed the same concept and could result in death of an actor. They also based much of their plays off of Greek tragedies and comedies. Women were not allowed to act, so their part was played by men wearing white masks. The Hippodrome was where the romans went to go and see chariot racing. The Circus Maximus was the largest Hippodrome.
In ancient Greece the Greeks were better in entertainment, art, and literature than the Romans. The Greeks created games that are enjoyable for people. However, the Romans created games the ended in death. This even sometimes happened in their theater. In the Greek theater they showcased much of their plays about life. Even though the Greeks were very off by the romans both had an influence for the romans and still have a huge influence on our way of life.
Both civilization ideas are still being used in the world today. The Greeks were creative in entertainment, literature and art.
