Critical Thinking Application
Critical Thinking by some is thought to be as important as or more important than most material or physical items such as money, homes, or automobiles. So what is more important than critical thinking? Well, a couple of extreme examples to illuminate the point are food and water. They are without a doubt two of the most important items that our body requires for survival, and so it is with the application of critical thinking. In this paper I will discuss my understanding of critical thinking and relate it to a personal experience at work, showing its validity in the work environment. Non-critical thinkers ignore the fact that they can improve his or her way of thinking, whereas critical thinkers embrace new ways to improve his or her thinking process and analysis.
In today’s high tech world, one is bombarded with information from people and organizations offering services and or goods. These sales pitches come from advertisements on the television, radio, the internet, and email. Someone is always trying to convince consumers that what is being marketed is either the best product or the truth. It is up to the individual to determine if what is being said about a product or service, or what someone is trying to convince them to believe, is true. In order for one to come to a conclusion he or she must determine the truth. The importance of critical thinking is that it allows anybody with these skills to analyze all the facts and information of any give situation or issue, determine if what is being told is the truth or if he or she is being mislead, and make an appropriate decision. Critical thinking, like so many other skills that are learned, improves with practice and has its rewards and benefits.
The benefits one will acquire by improving his or her critical thinking will be allow individuals to find the best solutions to situations and problems, to identify issues without losing train of thought, to help anyone recognize other people’s motives and to be more open-minded, to ask pertinent questions, and to help them communicate effectively with others as they solve difficult problems (Feldman, 2002). These skills will make anyone become astute critical thinkers, helping him or her make well informed decisions.
All decisions have consequences that will affect other people. A consequences effect can be either harmful or beneficial to other individuals, depending on the situation and or the decision a person makes. The decision depends on whether the individual is using critical thinking or not.
