Emotional Intelligence and its Role in the Workplace
Emotional intelligence (EI) brings together emotions and intelligence by looking at emotions as valuable sources of knowledge that can help with the perception and management of one’s emotions and the emotions of others. Psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer formally define emotional intelligence as “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings, to discriminate among them, and use the information to guide one’s thinking and action.”(Mayer & Salovey, 1990, p. ...view middle of the document...

4). Another way of explaining this branch of emotional intelligence is by referring to it as social awareness. The second ability, relating to emotions, is using emotions to assist in different rational activities, such as problem solving and thinking. Knowing how to use and apply emotions to circumstances allows an individual to capitalize on the circumstances, or use those emotions to benefit the task at hand. Understanding emotions is the ability to comprehend information about the connections between emotions, the change from one to another, and to characterize those emotions using words (American Scientist, 2005 para. 25). The fourth branch of emotional intelligence consists of the ability to manage emotions in one’s self and in others. While some people have these skills innately, they are obtainable through training and can improve over time with practice, occurring as a lifelong learning process (Human Relations, 2010, p. 257). Along with one’s proficiency in their professional abilities, EI skills are contributing to personal and professional success by using this knowledge in a practical real way (p. 257). Developing these skills help build strong interpersonal relationships, empathy, effective communication and connection with others.
Emotions are confronted daily in the workplace; they can range from anger to frustration, to enthusiasm and contentment. These emotions if understood can be beneficial to productivity in the workplace; for example enthusiasm can influence one’s creativity and increase motivation to complete the task. The development of EI skills can benefit a broad range of people in any type of work environment. For example, executives must make decisions daily that may make or break their companies. They must rely on the people under them to achieve the goals that they are personally held accountable for by the board of directors. In order to get the results he or she is demanding of their employees knowing how to apply their own emotions and the emotions of their team is important. By understanding and properly utilizing the emotions of each individual within the group he/she can use those emotions to lead the team to successfully working together and achieving their desired goal.
