In this dynamic and ever changing global economy, successful leaders will have to facilitate others to develop their own style of leadership, skills and potential using emotional intelligence as guide of future success. Emotional Intelligence is a trait that is demonstrated by successful leader. Daniel Goleman believes is twice as important as IQ in predicting career success. (Richards, 2007). Effective leader are those that understand who they are and are able to control themselves under different circumstances. They are self-motivating and people are drawn to them. (Dess, Lumpkin & Eisner, 2008). The phrase that the text use “ IQ gets you hired, but EQ get you promoted” (Dess, Lumpkin & Eisner, 2008 pg. 417) If an organization is going to survive it must have in my humble opinion two key elements. The first element is a product or service that people need and second you need people to help execute, develop and implement the company’s strategic plan. Successful organization have dynamic leaders that have a high level of EI that work well under pressure and are able to create value for the organization in which they lead. Daniel Goleman argues that without EI “a manager could have excellent training, a great mind and full of ideas but will still never become a great leader.” (Dess, Lumpkin & Eisner, 2008 pg. 418). An organization could waste value resource gear toward training and mentoring an individual for future success because of low emotional intelligence. Using EI a predictor of future success would assist organization put there resources to better use.
EI is best defined “as the ability to perceive and express emotions, to use emotions to facilitate thinking, to understand and reason with emotions and to effectively manage emotions within oneself and in the relationships with others” (Northouse, 2007 pg. 22) To truly understand the importance of this topic we must break down the key elements of this concept. Daniel Goleman’s s study had two categories he named Self Management skills, and Management relationships. (Dess, Lumpkin & Eisner, 2008) The two categories were further broken down into five distinct traits. The concept of self-management skill is this if a leader posses this ability they are able to control their own emotion in essence able to mange themselves. A successful leader must understand who they are and be able to look at themselves in the mirror and make an honest assessment of were they are. This is crucial for leadership because you cannot lead others if you can’t manage yourself. The first trait under Self- management category is self-awareness. Self-awareness is the ability to know yourself and also how your moods affect others. It is not only important to understanding your strength and weaknesses but how they affect the people around you as well. Second trait is self -regulation, this trait the person is able to not only understand their impulsive behaviors, but also control them. The last trait under self-management is motivation this trait is essential for leadership. A leader must not only motivate themselves but also motivate others to achieve great things within an organization. A person armed with this trait has a passion for work that goes beyond money and status. (Baldoni, 2005) This trait become contagious and creates an environment where motivation thrives and people are willing move mountains for an organization. Managing Relationships is the second category under EI and a leader who posses this ability is able to relate to those around them. ...
