Factors influencing embryonic growth

The role of folic acid is to help prevent birth defects of the baby’s brain and spinal cord. Folic acid is a B vitamin that is used to help with the production of red blood cells and also helps iron work, as it should in the blood. It is especially important when cells and tissues are growing rapidly, such as in infancy. This helps the baby’s neural tube develop into the brain and spinal cord.

It is better if the B vitamin folic acid is taken before pregnancy so that it is already in the mothers body which helps in the early stages such as the first 3 to 4 weeks of the babies growth as this can cut the chances of neural tube disorders. This ...view middle of the document...

Alcohol can cause miscarriage and premature birth. Drinking too much alcohol can also have a risk of your baby being still born. If you drink too much alcohol during pregnancy it can permanently damage the baby’s developing cells. This can also affect how your baby’s face, organs and brain grow. Heavy drinking can affect the baby’s nervous system, this means the baby will develop fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and the problems can range from social problems, mild learning difficulties or other birth defects.

Substance abuse is when the mother is taking drugs during the pregnancy, this could be due to the mother being a drug addict or because they are taking medicines not always realising that these can affect the baby. Different substances have different affects on the baby.

Common painkillers can harm the baby, whereas some medicines are safe, it is knowing which ones are ok to take and seeking professional advice. Illegal drugs such as cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin can cause serious damage to the baby. They can cause a load of developmental problems.
