Elle pense que ces ambitions peuvent être réalisées en France.En outre, les illusions romantiques du voyageur et du rêve du déplacement sont également encapsulées dans le thème du voyage. D'abord quand Sahondra s'embarque sur son voyage, Rakotoson présente ses perceptions naïves et romantiques de la France; une perception qui a été endoctrinée en elle des l'enfance. « Là-bas, c'est un pays riche. Les voisins le racontaient souvent, les magasins remplis de nourriture, les poubelles où tout est jeté, les voitures, les immeubles. » En dépit des avertissements de Marie, son correspondant français : « il vaut mieux que tu arrives ici sans trop d'illusions, c'est sûrement moins difficile de vivre en France que chez vous, mais ne t'attends pas à trouver le paradis sur terre... » , Sahondra est résolu de l'embarquement sur son voyage et indique que « rien ni personne ne pourrait l'empêcher de partir » Cependant, quand elle arrive en France, elle se rend compte qu'elle aurait du écouter les avertissements de Marie, et que en fait, les notions romantiques qu'elle a tenues de la France étaient fictives : « La France, ça ?...Ah non alors, quelque chose ne collait pas.
