Effective Communication
Have you ever seen, heard, or witnessed an individual giving a speech or speaking in front of an audience? ...view middle of the document...

Over the past eight weeks, we have been thoroughly educated on human communications. We have seen from our peers, the strengths and weaknesses of communication overall. But, how does one become an effective communicator? We must first understand the five basic purposes of communication. First, we must understand our sense of self. Doing this, we can see “who we are, what we are good at, and how people react and behave” through our actions (9). Second, we need “to meet our social needs” (9).
Interacting with other people is important and is used as a cycle of learning experience for communication. We all need this as a part of our everyday lives. Third, we develop relationships. As a part of our social needs, we develop and maintain these relationships that become lasting. We all need relationships so we can have someone to communicate with, right? I believe this is the most important of the five. Fourth, is how we process and exchange information.
In today’s world, Facebook has become how a majority of us exchange our information. Social media is everywhere and is also utilized through text messages, email, and good old face to face. Lastly, we have influence. Influence can be seen almost every day in one way, shape or form. Our ability to influence or persuade others into doing something is shown through how well we effectively communicate.
As you can see, these are five basic purposes that we must fully understand if one must become effective. Through my experience, communication was not always my strong point. I never really took time to understand my sense of self as I saw it. My self-esteem was medium to almost low because I had a speech deficiency. I never wanted to talk to anyone because of what they would say about me. Therefore, my social needs were only really existent at home. At school, I never wanted to socialize unless I really had to. It wasn’t until later on in high school I realized that I must get over my fear; my fear of communication. By knowing and understanding these five purposes, we can build and get over these fears early rather than later.
In the next portion of this essay, I would like to describe and analyze communication in small groups, interpersonal, intercultural, as well as public speaking situations. I will then go into detail my communication overall in each of these situations.

Small Group Communication
Small group communication is basically what it means. Any group of individuals that come together and typically involve anywhere from three or more people are considered a small group. In a classroom environment, we all have probably gotten in small groups to do an assignment at one time or another. In any group, we tend to feel each other out until relationships are established. These are established through messages that are being sent to one another through verbal or non-verbal communications. These types of communications will make or break a group....
