Effective Communication
“The effect of organizational structure on managerial communications is an important feature for management to consider as they perform their daily operations with staff and other levels of management.” Schermerhorn, J. R., & Lombardi, D. N. (2007). There are several types of structures used today in the health care organizations; and these different structures allow for various ways of managing groups of people or individuals to perform tasks to complete projects. Because people from different departments are cooperating so closely, they are eager to share data that will help them achieve common goals. In effect, the entire organization becomes an information web; data is channeled both vertically and horizontally as people exchange technical knowledge, marketing data, product ideas, financial information to make decisions.” ("Matrix Management and Structure," n.d.). In communication, we use the resources that are available to us, which allows us to communicate in a more efficient manner. We use the internet, databases, texting and emailing for our primary ways of communication. The team members are working in two different types of groups or for two bosses as stated above and fast effective communication is vital in moving the progression of the project.
Advantages of using the matrix structure in our organization outweigh the disadvantages because teams are formed with members who provide the same type of services, work within the same processes, serve similar patients and are located in the same are or geographical region. We are able to utilize face-to-face communication more and the understanding of the projects and ideas are shared within the same group. The project manager can take that information and send to the entire team through resources mentioned. Most organizations have to use the technology available today such was webcams, video meetings, internet and emails to continue to meet deadlines and make fast pace changes and meet the challenges associated with a project head on. This allows for the costs of projects, manpower hours and delivery of a project to be contained in the criteria provided by upper management.
Disadvantages that we have found using the matrix structure is that we lose some of the decision making due to upper management. We have to rely on upper management, when a challenge is present, to make decisions on a higher level. Communication with upper management can be slow moving, and the main source is through email. We have to wait for responses and that could cause several days delay for our project or a remedy to the challenge that we...
