Education Excellence

In order for our children to succeed in life they need an education. With the need to improve education in the United States, the government saw a need to improve the national educational achievement rates. The best place to start when improving the national educational achievement rates is when the children first begin school. “In a 1983 report, titled A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform, by the National Commission on Excellence in Education, helped create a public demand for change in the public schools.” (Berns, 2010, p. 212) This report is what encouraged the government to make the change. “To address the charges made by the report, ...view middle of the document...

When it comes to nutrition and physical activity prior to the child beginning school, it is almost impossible for government to require certain guidelines because the schools have no control over what is being done prior to the child starting. Lastly when it comes to the first goal, it is wanting every parent to be the child’s first teacher and gives the parents the access to training and support that they need. This does not seem to have been met because there are so many parents who do not have the time unfortunately since they have to work to support the family. A recommendation for the school board would be to make sure all children are able to attend a preschool program. By doing this it will allow the children to learn, be healthy, exercise, and receive the nutrition they need to grow.

The second goal was to have the high school graduation rate increase to at least 90 percent. In comparison to the national average graduation rate, Texas is ranked as one of the highest in the United States. According to the Texas Education Agency web site, “Among the 34 states currently reporting the Compact Rate, also known as a four-year on-time graduation rate, Texas had the second highest graduation rate for white students at 91.6 percent”. (http://www.tea.state.tx.us) This places Caucasian students in Texas above the average and it also meets the goal that was set by the government. The part of the graduation rate that needs improvement is the Hispanic students and the African-American students. Neither of these rates meets the goal. Texas has “the fourth highest rate for Hispanic students with 78.8 percent. Texas also had the fifth highest rate for African-American students at 78.8 percent.” (http://www.tea.state.tx.us)

The third goal was to have all students leave grades 4, 8, and 12 having demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter including English, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Languages, Civics and Government, Economics, Arts, History, and Geography, and every school in America will ensure that all students learn to use their minds well, so they may be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in our Nation’s modern economy. In the state of Texas the schools require for the students to pass a TAKS test to move on to the last major grade. If the students do not get it, they do not get to move on to the next grade. For the most past all students are able to pass the test and move on to the next grade. This goal does need improvement because not all students are able to pass and move on to the next grade. One way to help this improve is to make sure that all the students who need additional tutoring are able to receive it. They could do this by creating student tutorials after school that is at no cost to the parents.

The fourth goal was to have the United States students be first in the world for mathematics and science achievement. This goal still needs...
