Have you ever heard about Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.? If not, you can easily find his information on the Internet. There are large numbers of websites wrote about King’s life and his career. In addition to basic information, some websites make mention of some fact which we do not usually read on the newspaper or see on the TV. In the world with too many choices, we have to decide which website and which information are useful. Moreover, as student when we are doing research paper, we need to choose very carefully. Among three websites FAIR, Workers World, Human Events about the question of “What did he do for the world?”, only site FAIR is useful for research because it has the best authority, coverage and objective.
The frist thing to use for comparing 3 websites is authority. Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon are the authors of the article in FAIR. We can know clearly they are “syndicated columnists and authors of Adventures in Medialand: Behind the News, Beyond the Pundits ...view middle of the document...
All informations which FAIR gives are about Martin Luther King. Unlike FAIR, Human Events is written about King, some other people who was republican and Democrat Party. Workers World talk very little about what King did for his country. The article of FAIR not only talk about basic information of King but also about his activities which do not make US Government satisfactory. Examples of them are King said “the U.S. was on the wrong side of a world revolution” and his complain about capitalists of the West “only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries”. Both Human Events and Workers World talked about the angry of US Government and the media when King againsted Vietnam war, but FAIR show more clearly details. For example, because of “Beyond Vietnam”, “King had also become the country’s most prominent opponent of the Vietnam War, and a staunch critic of overall U.S. foreign policy”.
The objective is the third thing we use to compare these sites. FAIR is more reliable than the other websites because it is more objective. It is written to tell a fact about the last years of Martin Luther King and there are not any comment on his behavior. Different from FAIR, each of Human Events and Workers World based on one point of view. Human Events is written about the struggle between Republic Party and Democrat Party. It had strongly bias against Democrat Party, such as “We must demonstrate that the Democrat Party policies of socialism and dependency on government handouts offer the pathway to poverty, while Republican Party principles of hard work, personal responsibility, getting a good education and ownership of homes and small businesses offer the pathway to prosperity”. The article of Workers World compared Dr King with other leaders and common on his feelings in the struggle when he became a civil rights activist. “Like many men, he had his highs and his lows, his fears and his doubts, his inspirations and his insights. His Washington speech—known as “I Have a Dream”—was neither his finest, nor his most profound, but like many Black preachers who are master orators, he brought his best to it”
Comparing is very important for chossing which source is better and more useful. “The Matin Luther King You Don’t see on TV” of FAIR is an useful article for the research about Dr King’s life.
