Diversity in the Workplace

Diversity in the workplace means celebrating the differences between us and everyone else we work with in our place of employment. Diversity is represented in a number of characteristics such as ethnicity, sexual preference, age, religious affiliation, learning styles, education and life experiences. It's important to understand how these differences affect motivation, performance, our interactions with others, and professional achievements. (Scott, n.d.)

Diversity training will help employees recognize their behaviors that could possibly create a hostile or uncomfortable work environment despite certain opinions they may have about their co-workers. The better individuals within an organization work together, that feeling of unity will extend into working with their customers. Organizations that have a more diverse work group will be able to offer a wider variety of services and skills. An organization striving to a have diverse workforce should implement an effective recruitment strategy. (Diversity Training in the Workplace, n.d.)
Value of Diversity
We live in a world where dealing with people from extreme cultural diversities is part of everyday life. If we do not embrace this diversity, we risk losing opportunities for personal growth and growth within our work groups. The value of diversity within organizations is so great. There is value in the knowledge and experience that comes with a diverse work group, the level of team work can be improved as well as overall better performance. A culturally diverse work group can be more creative and flexible and can foster new ways of thinking. As we learn from customers and colleagues it will expand our own knowledge and help us to work more efficiently and be more tolerant as individuals. Workplace diversity can make organizations more productive and profitable. If we try to understand and embrace these differences great benefits will be realized.
Benefits of Diversity
Companies will experience valuable benefits if they incorporate diversity training and promote diversity in the work place. Companies will experience higher employee retention rates, improved individual and team performance and morale, reduced harassment incidences, charges, and discrimination lawsuits and improved workforce staffing.
