Effective Communication in the Workplace
Communication is vital to the success of an organization. Communication refers to the process by which information is transmitted and understood between two or more people (McShane & Glinow, 2013, p. 260). Although organizations tend to rely on other mechanisms such as corporate goals and objectives, communication is what links them together. In order for employees to function properly within an organization, employers, and managers need to focus on how to communicate effectively within its organization.

E-mails are an abundant form of communication within the workplace and can provide efficiency to the flow of communication throughout an organization. However; the right communication channel is very important when delivering particular messages, such as the situation I described above. First, social acceptance, and media richness should be considered important factors in determining the right form of communication within an organization. For instance, social acceptance involves how well an organization approved the way communication is delivered to them.
In some organizations, employees expect to receive important information in a direct manner, such as face-to-face and not by e-mail or other written forms of communication. Every organization has its own culture and varies according to mutual agreements among all members. The company I work for in the past use e-mails, especially to inform the staff of a significant change such as skills day, departmental changes, and upcoming blood drives on the campus as well as reminders for employee annual checkups. We were shock to receive an email with discussions of a merger. My guess is the management did not want to deal with any confrontations or questions at that time. If the email had more detail information inside, the staff would have accepted the changes efficiently and probably without delay or misunderstanding.
Media richness is also an important factor to consider when communicating in the workplace. According to Daft & Lengel (1986), “Media richness refers to the medium’s data-carrying capacity-the volume and variety of information that can be transmitted during a specific time”. Face-to-face communication is one of the major communication channels regarding media richness. It allows individuals to communicate verbally and sometimes nonverbally. The sender can evaluate the receiver directly and upfront. Feedback also can be received immediately instead of individuals decoding the message, which they receive and make a response.
Although we were informed briefly on some of the new changes to come into action, the staff, and I were still left with alot of unanswered questions and concerns. As time pass, numerous problems and issues started arising, and the staff started discussing about the things they heard through the grapevine. For example, I started hearing rumors about some of the new changes supposed to take place soon in our unit as well as the rest of the hospital. I also heard that our supervisors were going to be replaced because the department head felt like the supervisors on our unit was too friendly with the staff. Communicating through the grapevine has pros and cons.
The grapevine works through the social networks of an organization which communication is easily transferred form one person to another, regardless of truth or untruth. Some people indulge in this type of behavior because of past circumstances such as acquiring relevant information regarding a rumor....
