Changing World and Changing Work

Over the semester, we have learned a lot of information about the training industry and how quickly it changes. One training trend that we have not explored this semester is Diversity. Diversity Training can be a critical topic in its own right. Because of the sensitivity of the matter companies today take diversity seriously. Diversity training is an old topic that is a renewed interest more often than you can imagine; because of the increasing diversity in the workforce, increased immigration and the need for more “global” skills. Diversity awareness training assists in developing decision-making, so that employees learn to view events and situations from a variety of perspectives (this relates to week 3-How we learn). All of which helps in adding to the total benefits (Training ROI).
Diversity has reached new heights. As noted, “Corporate demands for diversity training are undergoing significant changes in 2005 and will continue to evolve into different subsections, as businesses and organizations open their classroom doors and witness discrimination and biases within their own workforce.” (Mcgundale)
For every positive report about Diversity training there is a negative. The Author Ryan O’Donnell states, “The reasonable solution to the problems that the diversity industry claims to solve is obvious. It is in fact what most businesses too small to be worth shaking down do: set straightforward rules that employees must not discriminate or harass and enforce them. That’s it.
