Diversity in the United States
Calvin A. Goldsberry
Taking this course in ethics has given me more knowledge and understanding of how to relate to people of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. I understand that I have to resist the temptation to accept stereotypes that people believe and are portrayed in media about different groups of people. ” Because of this the mixed race or biracial population will grow the fastest. Contrary to history interracial relationships are increasingly tolerated and considered acceptable by much of the younger generations. This is already becoming apparent in society today with the large numbers of interracial couples seen together in places like restaurants, movies and other public places that couples go together.
The United States of America faces the challenge of animosity between people of different races and cultural backgrounds because of the high level of diversity of its people. In America people tend to separate themselves based on many different things such as race, religion, sexual orientation and so on. It is so important to respect what others believe in because we all want the same for ourselves. Acceptance is the first step, but in order for us to function at our highest level as a society we have to practice pluralism. We need to actively seek understanding of other people different from us. In our society I think fear of people who are not the same as us is what motivates discrimination because we all seem to fear the unknown. People can accept different people to some extent, but many people never take the next step have a genuine interest in learning about the...
