“A social class is a category of people who share similar amounts of wealth, power, and prestige” (Bucher & Bucher, 2010, "Gauging the Level of the Playing Field"). In America usually your social class is determined by a number of diverse characteristics such as your political class, your house, what you own, your net worth, and you occupation. Just to add a little bit more to those factors are the different views of morals, manners, attitude, hygiene, and also the material things such as jewelry, your hair, the vehicle that you drive, and the way that you dress. Some characteristics are visible and some are more secretive than others. The reason that I consider myself as being in the lower middle class because I am currently seeking my first degree, my income, the price I pay to live where I live at and I have purchased a car in the past. I felt somewhat uncomfortable at Picadilly because I always said that there food reminded me of cafeteria food from grade school. I would always think about how the cafeteria would smell every morning when I passed by. Picadilly had customers of more than one race or culture they seem to be more diverse , where on the other hand at Portabellas the customers were primarily Caucasians. When comparing the two location’s parking lot Piccadilly parking lot had all types of cars from beat up cars that look like they don’t even run to GMC trucks, SUVs, and Dodges as for Portabella’s parking lot nice luxury cars such as Cadillac, Mercedes, and Lexus. While in Portabella’s I observed that it was more of groups of business people, and more like dates as for Piccadilly had more kids there with their parents. I also found that at Portabellas the customer did not so much care about the prices of the food that they were ordering compared to Piccadilly the customers were asking to make sure that what they were ordering is on the dilly menu. Going into this observation my perception of the upper class was as follows I believed that they spend all their time shopping, and riding around in there big fancy cars and being snotty all day, but I could have not been more wrong. I see now that I had just stereotyped these group of people just like I would do anyone else, in actuality I have come to realize through this observation that just because I cannot afford to live like they are living and afford the finer things in life that they are no different than I am. I also came to realize that the type of car you drive does not define you either. My post observation is that i still think that it is unreasonable to spent the type of money on a dish at a finer restaurant when you can get that dish for a lot cheaper price at a less expensive restaurant.
