Diversity Essay

590 words - 3 pages

All holidays are special in different ways. Even though most people choose Christmas or any other holiday where gifts are given, I’m different whereas my most favored holiday is Thanksgiving. The reason why I chose thanksgiving is not because of all the wonderful food, rather all the cherished memories that are spent with family and close friends.
Every time November comes around I always check off the days until Thanksgiving. It’s very thrilling waiting until November 22. To keep my mind off Thanksgiving I usually keep my focus on other upcoming events. I really enjoy Thanksgiving because of the fact my whole family comes over and spends the entire day at my house. It’s a very rare moment when a large number of family members come over and spend time with each ...view middle of the document...

I help my mom set the table, after everything is ready an hour goes by, my family members slowly start to show up.
Since I have a big family and a small house, the space gets pretty limited but it doesn’t stop anything from continuing. We Ethiopians are known for making space for others. We are very considerate people. So, once everybody is in and situated we all begin to pray; usually my father says the prayer. Prayer is a very important part of our religion since we are Christian. After prayer, the feast begins! There’s a mixture of Ethiopian and American food. Since there is plenty of food served, everybody goes back for seconds and thirds. Once situated, we all say what we’re thankful for. Afterwards all the socializing and jokes sets in motion. Surprisingly, even though I have a huge family, we all still play board games somehow. Its funny playing with them because nobody likes to lose so they’ll do anything to win and it get’s extremely amusing. Several hours pass and my family slowly starts to leave. I get sad but then again realize on the day we shared. Once everyone has completely left, I help my mom clean and get ready to go to bed.
The reason why I really enjoy Thanksgiving is because my family and I spend cherished memories together. Since we don’t do it often, it becomes really important to see them because life is short and you don’t know what can happen tomorrow. Family is very important to me because without them you’re nothing. Family is also vital because they tell you what’s wrong and what’s right and if you were to ever push them away, they’d never do the same simply because they love you. Your family needs you and you need your family, it’s simple. “Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.”
