• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
“Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons” (Schaefer, 2012). The reason or prejudice on the possible reason makes for discrimination in the office place. If you get the job you can feel discriminated against, if you lost the job opportunity you feel discriminated against. The main casues are due to someones personal hang ups and feeling about something they apply their personal feeling to the unrealated situation. A very common reason for discrimination is the difference in finiancal background. The wealthiest people are unaccepting of the less wealthy, this perpetuates the cycle again and again. “African American and other minority groups have had less opportunity to accumulate assets such as homes, land, and savings that can insulate them and later their children from economic setbacks.” (Schaefer, 2012). The casues of discrimination are varied, everyone has different personal opinions for their own prejudices and stereotypes, and if they allow these feelings to materialized in their actions they are discriminating.
