Yolanda Turner is an African-American female who began her employment with the city and county of San Francisco in 1997. She was employed as a custodian at City Hall and reported to Ricardo Martinez. Ricardo was a middle aged Filipino man who was known for not particularly liking blacks due to his generalization that they all had extremely poor work ethics.Within Yolanda's first few years of employment, she heard several rumors about how her supervisor treated African-American employees in the past but she paid the gossip no mind. He made it known that her constant need for time off was unacceptable regardless of the reason and if she wishes to keep her job, she needs to make an effort to come back to work as soon as she possibly could. End of story. For several weeks, he continued to harass her and tear her down by threatening to fire her as well make accusations that she was lying about her daughter being seriously ill. He felt as though none of what she said was true and left it as that. The thought that someone would think this ordeal could be made up upset Yolanda. She was not a slacker and did not feel the right to be called one, let alone disrespected.Regardless of Ricardo's concerns, Yolanda went ahead and filed a claim with the state of California Employment Development Department (EDD) to request paid family leave so that she could care for her daughter and remain by her side. Shortly after Yolanda submitted her claim, she received a notice from the EDD that her claim had been declined. As upsetting as this was for Yolanda, her only concern was the well-being of her child. Her employment and financial situation was on the back burner as opposed to her daughter.Yolanda stuck by Donielle's side no matter what the consequence was, until one day she received an eviction notice from her landlord. She had no money coming in and did not know what else to do. She confided with Marsha Carson, the Transplant Coordinator from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and let her know of her situation. Marsha was appalled by her situation at work and immediately took action. She contacted the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Yolanda's behalf to file a complaint against Ricardo Martinez. In addition, she contacted the EDD to investigate their reasons why Yolanda was denied paid family leave. She even wrote a letter to her landlord to inform them as to her situation.From this point forward, Yolanda's life was heading in the right direction.
