Disabled Veterans Affirmative Action Program Essay

There is a constant argument whether disabled veterans should get preferential treatment over better qualified candidates who are not disabled veterans. It is common for most employers to prefer to hire a person without a disability regardless of qualifications over a disabled veteran that has a physical or mental impairment which limits one or more major life functions. There is a phobia that the employer will have to change the way business is done and possibly feeling uncomfortable in the work place. Also, the physical changes of the workplace as well, for example, the facility may not be to standard for wheelchair access. Federal or local government agencies are required to adhere to laws to stop discriminating against veterans with disabilities such as Disabled Veterans Affirmative Action Program (DVAAP) of 1944. ...view middle of the document...

There are other affirmative action programs to help people whether they have a disability or they are a part of a minority race or gender. As an example equal opportunity was offered to women in the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibited sex discrimination in employment. Although sex discrimination and discrimination against veterans with disabilities are both employment equality discriminations and both have fought long and hard for equal rights they are very different. The 1964 Civil Rights Act offered women the opportunity to equal employment and promotions. Disabled Veterans Affirmative Action Program (DVAAP) of 1944 gives disabled veteran’s preferential treatment.
The main ethical principle should not be a deontological argument, but rather should be utilitarianism. The logic of affirmative action as a whole is great example of utilitarian considerations. The greatest number of people will actually be helped by ensuring that discrimination of any type (including the issue of reverse discrimination) does not continue in the United States. It is very important to use arguments that one can make to show why reverse discrimination will harm a large number of people, including those who it is designed to protect and care for. This harm can come from aggravation that others feel when they notice the reverse discrimination, but it can also come from employers and institutions that are being forced to hire or admit people who are clearly not qualified on the basis of their race, gender or disability, or what they have done for the country in the past. Affirmative action is supposed to be a tool used to promote equality across the board for hiring, retaining, or promoting employees but only when those characteristics (disabilities, gender, race or religion) are completely irrelevant will everyone really be 'equal' in the pursuit for employment, retention or promotion.
