Financial Performance of the Bank:

Mercantile Bank Limited has made a staggering 37.72 percent growth in Operating Profit in 2008 to BDT 2831 million largely backed by a quantum growth of Net Interest Income (NII). Further analysis of Operating Profit 2008 reveals that MBL has been able to arrest the falling trend of Net Interest Income (NII) successfully in 2008 by managing balance sheet properly. This improvement once again reinforces the fact that MBL is clearly on the right track of solidifying its growth potential despite having lower investment income than expected. A usual growth of Brokerage and Commission Income and a comfortable growth of other operating income to the tune of BDT 333 million have outweighed the apparent shrinkage (negative growth) of investment income.

Provision for loans and advances has increased very little by 3 percent in 2008 (BDT 578 M vs. 563 M) causing a positive growth of Profit after Tax by 13.95 percent to 615.88M...
