Social scientists acquire a knowledge and understanding of the inequalities and differences in contemporary societies. Drawing on the Making Social Lives DVD, City Road displays a range of inequalities within a variety of issues. The term inequality is referred to as ‘the unequal distribution of valued social resources within a society or between societies’ (Open university Glossary, 2013). However, compared to the pool hall where younger people attend to socialise and enjoy a friendly atmosphere although some of the local bars employ bouncers who allow and exclude certain people, this can be linked with age issues. Although the difference in age, within the society they indicate that attitudes and norms are what shape the view within the society and everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging. Having considered why people may have new understandings within their society it is also reasonable to look at the tensions from the continuous reshaping of society and the changes that happen. A local resident and the female in the pool hall agree that at nighttime City Road is not safe to walk down and the sense of feeling safe in the community. Furthermore, the final point to consider is the ethnically inequalities which can be seen in City Road. During a conversation Janet Symmons who owns the shop Xquistite Africa, it becomes clear that the products which are sold within the shop are providing a diverse cultural identity. The products are imported from overseas or within the UK to offer several different products which confirm a person’s identity instead of the person imitating a known identity within the society. Simon Bromley suggests that society needs to adapt to new complex identities by giving people their cultural inclusion within society instead of them changing to the surrounding cultural interpretations (‘Making Social Lives on City Road’, 2009, scene 2). Also Blakeley et al,. (2013, p. 36) discusses how Nof exhibitions his identity through his restaurant business’ and how multiply identities have to be used to feel a sense of belonging as different identities may not be viewed equally through people’s opinions.

In conclusion, social lives are diverse in many ways, people search for a sense of belonging to the community...
