Demonstrative Communication Paper

Demonstrative communication is the process in which we send and receive messages using the several forms of human behavior that demonstrate what we are thinking in the current situation. This includes visual cues such as body language, distance and proximity, facial expressions and movement. It also includes the way we communicate with others verbally in our tone of voice, length of talk and emotion of the message being sent.

We gain understanding of human behavior as we go through life, learning from social interactions with different people. Our lack of understanding of certain cultural forms of communication may be unknown, unless we have experienced or learned about them.
When I was a teenager, I traveled to Nicaragua to visit distant family members. It was the first time I left the country, so there were several differences that I noticed culturally. One of those differences was that I felt social greetings were much more personal with a kiss on the cheek and embrace, which I was not used to in the United States. Also I learned how to communicate non-verbally with my cousin of the same age, because I did not speak Spanish well and my cousin did not speak English. We were able to take a bus together to the town of Matagalpa to visit family and attend a large weekend event. We were able to communicate by using gestures, body language and facial expressions. I learned so much that weekend about her although our communication was limited. As adults, we still communicate both in English and Spanish via Facebook and try to keep in touch with each other’s lives.
Our feelings can be expressive in the way that we present our messages to one another, especially those we know well. We may be having a conversation with a close friend who knows our mannerisms well, so a certain look or facial expression can serve as a response to a situation or question. We may expect that they understand the subtle message through the years of knowing one another and trust. These expectations can also lead to miscommunication, so it’s best to be clear about your message.
