Demonstrative Communication

The main methods of communication that people think of are verbal and written, but people tend to forget about some of the most import nonverbal and unwritten messages one can receive that will influence one’s perception of the intended message. Although verbal and written communication is the most recognized, it is still important to pay attention to facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. When combining the two sets, messages can become more effective or less effective and it is vital to learn the most effective ways to send and receive messages.

Demonstrative communication contains all the communication that does not involve verbally or written messages. Instead, demonstrative communication deals with the nonverbal and unwritten cues that the sender and receiver simultaneously send during the whole sharing process. As mentioned previously, these nonverbal cues include facial expression, body language, and tone of voice. While communicating with another individual one may be consciously or unconsciously sending unspoken feedback that can show level of understanding or confusion. For example, a superior in a place of work is directing his or her employees to complete certain tasks for the day. If the superior’s message is clear and adequately delivered then he or she may be receiving nonverbal cues from the employees based off of their understanding. Some may be giving nods that suggest that they understand what is being said. Others that do not understand might be throwing their hands up in confusion or appear to have a confused facial expression. In addition to that, some of the employees may not be happy with tasks, so their body language would be more stand offish or they may have an angry facial expression. All of these examples are what make up demonstrative communication.
Effectively using demonstrative communication is very important to the communication cycle. If it is being done properly in conjunction with verbal communication then both parties should have shared understanding. For example, eye contact is a very important nonverbal cue. To hold strong eye contact shows that attention is being held. It can also show confidence and the knowledge on the topic being discussed. If one is not holding eye contact or rather looking around or down at the floor it could suggest that one may not be paying attention or perhaps does not care about the message.
