DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
Research has been defined by different people in different ways. At any point in time, depending on what an individual is doing in relation to a particular topic or subject area of study, there is the tendency that one may deem that activity as a form of research. Research therefore cuts across all facets of human endeavor; in the sciences, humanities, electronics etc. These diversities create room for one to distinguish between what ...view middle of the document...
As a researcher/writer, you have the chance to dive more deeply into less frequently encountered pools of knowledge.
Research is very vital to our everyday decision making. It arms you from wrong informations and save time and money. Research requires time, effort, and sometimes money to have the evidence you need to make a sound decision that's why many avoid it. The research you do and evidence you gather will have an impact on your future. One needs to consider the risks or consequences of making an important decision with inadequate evidence.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
Research is based on direct experience or observation by the researcher. Empirical nature of research means that the research has been conducted following rigorous scientific methods and procedures. Each step in the research has been tested for accuracy and is based on real life experiences. Quantitative research is easier to prove scientifically than qualitative research. In qualitative research biases and prejudice are easy to occur. The fundamental goal of the research experience is to ensure that adequate empirical evidence is provided to support ones hypothesis. No claim in research should be made on wild guesses that cannot be supported by available evidence of data.
Research is based on valid procedures and principles. Systematic approach to research is the only approach for research. No research can be conducted haphazardly. Each step must follow the other. There are set of procedures that have been tested over a period of time and are thus suitable to use in research. Each research therefore should follow a procedure. Procedures in research lay bare a strong foundation for research. It clarifies what the researcher wants to do, how he/she wants to go about it, what kind of data he would want to use and how the data acquired will be employed in carrying out the research. The researcher’s thoughts must also follow a logical sequence.
Research is a cyclical process because it starts with a problem and ends with a problem. Every research starts with a problem issue. This sets the basis for the project. After the research, there will be several problems that could be identified again for further research. There will be no point in time where available information in a particular study could be totally conclusive and may not inspire further research. This is the reason why one of the key characteristics of research is its cyclicality. Whatever is churned out as a research finding could further be investigated.
Research utilizes proven analytical procedures in gathering the data, whether historical, descriptive, experimental and case study. Analysis is at the heart of every research endeavour. The basic assumption of research is that some information is missing and that must be found out. To find any information, there is the need for the researcher to use his analytical skills. ...
