For the rest of the afternoon, the group works non-stop at completing the brick laying. Shukhov manages to find a bit of steel in the snow and conceals it within his clothes, hoping to possibly make a knife when he has time. The supper bell rings and the men go off to their last meal of the day, only to find that they are missing someone from their group. (In order to attend supper, the group must have everyone present at the same time, otherwise no food). After finding the man asleep they are furious for delaying their mealtime.
Shukhov thinks about going back to the sick bay so that he may have a chance of getting the next day off, but quickly decides he would rather have supper instead. Upon returning to the mess hall, there is another inspection of clothes. Shukhov starts to panic, remembering the bit of steel he has hidden in his clothes. Surprisingly, the guard does not find the steel on him and he is spared from going to “the hole”. (This is what the workers call the solitary confinement cell). Returning back to the mess hall, Shukhov over hears that Tsezar has received quite a rich parcel in the mail. He decides to wait in the mailroom so that he may get a bit of the contents from Tsezar’s parcel. Heading back to find his comrades, he learns that he has been awarded 400 grams of bread for his exceptional work at the power station. He returns back to the barracks where he finds Tsezar laying out his parcel contents for everyone to see. After the last body count, Shukhov prepares for sleep, not knowing...
