FIT3002 Applications of Data Mining
Assignment 1 (100 marks)
This assignment requires you to use the data mining tool, WEKA, to build a good model from a given set of data; and then write a report to describe the process. The Hyperthyroid data set is for the study of hyperthyroid disease. The data is supplied by Garvan Institute and J. Ross Quinlan. An instance in this data set is a diagnosis record for a single patient, and the data set contains a total of 2800 instances. Each instance is represented by 29 input attributes and a class attribute indicating whether the diagnosis for the patient is hyperthyroid, T3 toxic, goitre, secondary toxic, or negative. The attribute information is ...view middle of the document...

Also, ignore the last step in the data mining process (i.e., "evaluate the final model") for this exercise because it requires a third data set which we don't have. Use the supplied to evaluate all models. Bonus marks will be given to students who have completed the following additional task: Convert the problem into a two-class problem having class labels of ‘sick’ and ‘negative’, and redo the experiments using the best classifier you have found earlier using the original data. Compare and analyse the results obtained from the original data and the converted data. You may use learning algorithms such as decision trees (J48), naive Bayesian classifier, support vector machines (SMO), K-nearest neighbour algorithm/lazy learner (IBk), linear regression, logistic regression in your exploration. You are encouraged to use other algorithms available in WEKA too. You may use WEKA or other software such as a spread-sheet program to do the data conversion. Your report needs to be concise and well-presented, and must not be more than ten pages (all contents are counted towards the ten pages with the exception of cover sheet and title page.) A report submission will be marked up to page 10 if it is more than ten pages. To get a Pass grade, you must perform data preparation/preprocessing, produce several different models and choose the best model, and submit a clearly written report describing the process. To get a better grade, you must show that you have performed extra data analysis and preprocessing, explored a wide range of different models and describe how the final model is produced and how it can be applied for future prediction. Note that since you are required to explore several models, you will get a FAIL grade if you simply report the result of a single model. You should check ‘A1 Report Template.pdf ’ for a suggestion of the kind of report expected for this assignment. Assessment criteria: Check the marking criteria...
