HRM 517 Managing Human Resource Projects

Critique the prioritizing process at D. D. Williamson
The “Vision Impact Project” (Kloppenborg, Nkomo, Fottler, & McAfee, 2012) took three years to set up and had to be done twice. If this had been done correctly from the beginning, it could have helped prioritize the project for the company. Project charters can and will help the process of a project, if they are not used problems will follow. When deciding to use a charter it is important to consider that the, “Truth is that if they start to consider creating a charter as a best practice, many problems or issues can be eliminated.” (Karim, 2012) D.D. Williams started out with too many projects on the agenda, because of this, there were projects that did not get finished that could have been to the company’s benefit.
If a Project charter is not used or completed correctly, there are issues that may occur for example, a “director or executive who said they would fund a project from their budget didn’t come through. The project charter should clearly state who is responsible for funding, and they need to sign it” (Tangco.R, 2013)
The reason that the projects that were most important did not get completed comes down to them not being prioritized correctly in order of importance, and were overlooked due to the amount of projects going on at the same time.
Organization seems to be an issue when D.D. Williams started on the projects. No one knew what was going on or what was supposed to happen next because of this, there were many issues which caused projects to go over budget or to fall behind the completion dates, which again causes the company more time and money.
Suggest at least one (1) recommendation to improve the prioritizing process
A recommendation to improve the process would be to improve the data for the projects, “The first step to getting better data is to make sure that information requirements are well-defined. If project proponents are clear about what information is needed to enable their proposals to be considered, they are much more likely to supply that information. Thus, the templates for collecting data on project proposals must be complete and precise.” (Improve the Prioritization Process, 2002-2014). Having a clear and precise information will help elevate problems.
A second recommendation is a strong project committee,” Many business ventures are started by a group of individuals who are getting together for the first time to explore a business idea. Decisions made during this formation period can be critical to the success of the business development process” (Hofstrand, 2013). A strong project committee will help put project together and then go through the process of prioritizing them by importance. Having a strong committee allows all the projects to be looked at and there is a larger...
