* What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand American history in ways that you may not have in the past.
The information about diversity that has helped me understand American history is that the United States is a “melting pot” of races, ethnicities, and cultures. We are not only learning new things about other people in the world around us but, we are learning new things about ourselves as well. If it weren’t for diversity, we would all look alike, sound alike, think alike, and eat alike. Throughout this course, I have learned to accept and ...view middle of the document...

* Trends in immigration will continue to shape the demographics of the United States, According to Census Bureau and other projections, what will the U.S. population look like in the year 2050?
The Census Bureau has formulated projections on the nation’s population approximately every four to five years since the 1940’s. According to the Census Bureau, depending on immigration, the United States population may climb approximately to 383 million or greater by the year 2050. On an average, each woman gives birth to two children throughout their life. The Census projections suggest that nearly one in five Americans will be foreign born. Non-Hispanic whites will rise from 14% to 29% in 2050 (2006, Census Bureau). Blacks make up 13% currently and will roughly be the same in 2050. Also, Asians will make up approximately 9% of population in 2050. Although, these projections from the Census Bureau may not be accurate, it is crucial to pay close attention to the underlying assumptions in which these projections are based. These projections consist of fertility, mortality, migration and perceived current trends in the demographic behavior. Besides, it is too early to determine what the studies will show as fertility and immigration have risen rather than decline in previous Census Bureau reports.
* What challenges does the United States face due to the diversity of its people?
The challenges the Unites States faces due to diversity of its people is the mutual respect for one another’s culture, a respect that allows minorities to express their own culture without suffering prejudice or discrimination. Cultural pluralism is the result of which minority groups partake fully in the dominant society, yet they uphold their differences. In society, it is imperative that society in one or more groups be able to interact while showing a certain degree of tolerance for each other. And where different cultures, races, and ethnicities can coexist without major conflicts and where minority cultures are inspired to uphold their traditions and believe. Diversity is not going anywhere any time soon, so it’s time we came together and embrace each other’s cultural differences and similarities despite any challenges that come our way.
Another challenge the United States endures is the demographic milestone that has marked a shift in the birth rate from the majority being white to the majority being minorities in which will collect social security benefits for retirement. Meaning diverse elders will be the majority of adults in 2050. In order to maintain economic security of its growing population, there needs to be a significant change in policies within the local, state, and federal levels. With diverse retirees making the majority of populations and being highly dependent on social security, many people may fall into the poverty line if the consumer prices continue to rise. Since we all be elderly someday, it...
