Cross Cultural Perspectives Essay

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global organization that is based throughout the world in over 150 countries. It is a leader in the fight against international crime, illegal drugs, crime and terrorism. Cultural issues are part of this organizations responsibility as it seeks to assist Member States in concerted efforts to improve the lives of everyday people. As global threats are on the rise, the UNODC continues to grow and its impact can be felt on many ethical and social levels.

All these areas and programs are run by the various field offices located throughout the world.
The cultural issues that this organization faces are immense. Some of those issues are related to the beliefs and practices of the members of that society. Those will differ based on the region of where the state or country is located. For example, terrorism has affected the international community since 1937 and has been dealt with from a legal and political perspective. The UNODC is now a leader is combating terrorism and provides Member States with reinforced programs and assistance. Another cultural issue that the UNODC faces is corruption. Corruption is widespread throughout the world and can be manifest into various offenses including but not limited to drug trafficking. According to the UNODC website (2012), “Drug trafficking is a global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. UNODC is continuously monitoring and researching global illicit drug markets in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their dynamics.” Corruption can also be seen in money laundering and the illegal proceeds from such acts. Most crime occurs because of one thing, the love of money. It doesn’t matter what demographic is out there, it encompasses all groups of people throughout the world. Money laundering is done in a criminals attempt to hide where the money came from and where it is going. It may be used by terrorist organizations to support their criminal activities or by financial institutions to gain an advantage over other companies. The UNODC fights these issues because it can greatly affect a countries economic stability and welfare.
Ethically and socially the UNODC has been handed a great responsibility. Every year on June 26 this organization raises awareness by launching the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Teachers can come and ask questions concerning all the issues related to drugs and children and how to help them stand up to peer pressure. They are handed helps in the form of books or videos. Parents can ask questions about teen behaviors or getting kids off the streets. Also on 9 December every year, the UNODC holds an International Anti-Corruption Day. On this day ordinary citizens can learn to play an important role in their government or cities by saying “no” to corruption.
